About Dayne

It is an honor for Dayne to be Mayor of Flint. Every day he wakes up and works hard for our city. Dayne was born and raised here in Flint. He attended Flint's public schools from kindergarten at Freeman Elementary through to his graduation from Flint Central High School. At Michigan State, he worked as a community organizer with AmeriCorps in north Lansing. He knows the common struggles families here face, but Dayne also knows that people in Flint have the skills and the dedication to make change. Dayne and his wife Carrie want their sons, who are the 5th generation in his family to live in this great city, to experience Flint as a vibrant place of opportunity in the 21^st Century.

A Hard Worker

Growing up in Flint, Dayne learned that it is hard working people who have made this city what it is today. His parents, both lifelong educators, are his role models. They showed him that when you receive an opportunity, you have a responsibility to work hard to make it mean something. From his job as a lifeguard at Bluebell Beach to his work with the Urban Coalition and National Voice, he has shown the courage to face tough challenges for the sake of the community. Nothing has changed as Mayor. Dayne has made the difficult decisions that others have put off. He knows that we all have to work together and that the results of change will take time to be noticed and appreciated.

A Public Servant

Dayne has learned from the best teachers across the globe. He knows that leadership starts with listening. This is why he started the Neighborhood Action initiative in Flint that included more than 1,400 participants from every ward in the city. From his experience working on President Obama's campaign, in Washington, D.C. for Mayor Anthony Williams, and with Congressman Kildee, Dayne knows that strong communities come as a result of people working together for the common good and setting egos aside. As Mayor, Dayne has remained an active member of his own church, Court Street United Methodist Church.

A LEADER

Dayne has a vision for Flint and he is leading the city forward into the 21^st Century. As a former owner and manager of 21st Century Performance--a Flint-based company that worked with non-profits and businesses—he knows that new jobs and a more diverse economy are the keys to our future. He has attracted major federal and state grants and also private investments. He also knows what it takes to spark innovation. He was the first Executive Director of Flint Club, a membership network of hundreds of people who care about Flint. As Mayor,  Dayne now also chairs the Economic Development Corporation, the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, the Downtown Development Authority, and the Energy Committee of the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce.

 

As Mayor, Dayne is working every day to develop jobs, rebuild neighborhoods, and improve our schools.
