This is Flint: Mr. Quinn's Creative Spirit

Despite the rain, I was out going door to door in Ward 1. When the door to Mr. Quinn's home was opened, I saw this beautiful painting on the wall. He told me that he taught visual arts in the Flint schools for many years and had recently retired. A fellow Flint Central graduate, Mr. Quinn had gone on to the University of Michigan where he was a Big Ten wrestling champion. During his time as a teacher, he shared his love of the arts with students at Flint Central, Southwestern and Holmes. It is a blessing to have such a creative spirit in our city.

Working for Change

Walling for Mayor volunteers dedicate their time and energy in many different ways. If going door-to-door isn't your thing, perhaps you would like to join the crew at the Walling campaign office stuffing letters and getting packets of literature ready for the streets.

The May 5th primary election is just a few days away but there is still lots of work to be done. You can start working for change in Flint as part of the Walling for Mayor team by calling us at 810-233-9190 or emailing us at votewalling@gmail.com

Genesee County Young Dems Endorse Walling

The Genesee County Young Democrats (GCYD) have announced their endorsement of Flint Mayoral Candidate Dayne Walling.

"I'm excited to have the endorsement of the GCYD, " said Walling. "A large part of the change we need for Flint is offering young people real opportunities so we can keep and grow our home grown talent rather than see them leave for Chicago or Boston."

"We have to change Flint so we can create jobs in new manufacturing and healthcare, improve neighborhoods, and ensure we have great schools for all students. Young people have a role to play in making these changes reality."

Move in to the Oak Business Center

The Oak Business Center is looking for a computer repair business as well as a barbershop to help compliment the businesses already in place at the center. If you or someone you know may be interested in taking advantage of this opportunity or if you just want to see one of the success stories in Flint, contact Bill Wood at 810-235-5555 or oakbusinesscenter@gmail.com. I know he would be pleased to hear from you.

There are also a few small office spaces available for only $95 per month including access to the conference and training rooms plus free wireless Internet. You can see the spaces in this picture.

This is Flint: Opportunities at the Oak Business Center

Did you see that Canadian radio station ad attacking Flint? It was 20 years outdated and missed all of the things that make this community great. That is why I am starting a This is Flint part of my website.

One recent story that I would like to share is about Bill Wood and the Oak Business Center on North Saginaw Street. On a tour of the Oak Business Center, I saw the 18 new and small community companies. It really is a great place to do business. In addition to the tax benefits of up to 75% in state tax abatements by locating in the Flint Renaissance Zone, businesses can take advantage of low overhead at the center with retail/office space going for $0.80 a square foot and light industrial space for $0.30 a square foot. Those are actual rent rates. This is how we flip our challenges into opportunities. This is what gives me hope that working together we can change Flint. This is Flint.--Dayne
