The Flint Police Officer's Association Endorses Dayne Walling for Mayor

Today in front of Flint's City Hall, representatives of the Flint Police Officer's Association officially endorsed Dayne Walling for Mayor of Flint.

"In light of the recent tragic shootings that have plagued the city, their endorsement and their confidence in my ability to be a strong and effective leader on the issue of public safety means a lot."--Dayne Walling

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are you running for Mayor?

I was born and raised in Flint and I know we can do better than this. I was blessed to have a great education through the Flint public schools. Today, I live in Flint with my wife and two young kids as do my parents and my grandmother and it's just not right for a place to have the kind of suffering and the lack of opportunity that Flint does now.

Flint has a strong history of change. A century ago Flint changed the world by putting it on wheels. Eighty years ago we changed the world again when workers banded together for the right to bargain in their own interests for respect and economic justice. I know that working together we can change Flint again. We can create good paying jobs in the city, strengthen our neighborhoods, and ensure every student has a great school from pre-school through graduation.

Opportunities and Possibilities

Possibility

This home in Flint's 8th ward is a prime example of what homeowners can achieve by purchasing additional lots adjacent to their house. The expansion of the traditional city lot gives the property a suburban look in the heart of the city.

Opportunity
Here is a nearby property that needs to be torn down to make way for higher value uses.

Flint's Block Clubs and Neighborhood Organizations

Flint is fortunate to have a strong tradition of block clubs and neighborhood organizations. Dayne Walling knows that these groups play a vital role in working for positive change in our community. He recently attended a ward 5 meeting where public safety, overgrown lawns and city parks, and ways in which the community could reuse school buildings were discussed. Dayne attended the Neighborhood Coalition Meeting at the Northside mini-station this week where the focus was on ways to hold the Land Bank accountable for its properties and ways to diversify Flint's economy. Dayne also attended a block club meeting at the corner of McClellan and Proctor where the neighbors were very concerned with the abandonment of Civic Park, neighborhood code enforcement, and the city finances.

Dayne is going to need every one's help to work for real change in Flint. Block club and neighborhood association leaders will be encouraged to also be leaders in Dayne's Neighborhood Action Teams. The Neighborhood Action Team's mission will be to address the concerns specific to each ward of the city by organizing existing city workers into teams accountable for improving our community through collaboration and joint planning.

Block Club leaders are encouraged to call the Walling for Mayor office at 233-9190 and schedule a time to meet with Dayne to share your plans and concerns for your neighborhoods.

Taking Care of All of Our Neighborhoods

Dayne Walling wants to bring positive changes to all of Flint's neighborhoods. Here are the first steps he proposes to get our city moving in the right direction.

  • Neighborhood Action Teams: Organize existing city workers into teams accountable for improving our community through collaboration and joint planning
  • Safe Streets: Open a police mini-station in every ward for community police patrols to decrease crime in neighborhoods and around schools, parks, hospitals, and businesses
  • Learn Here, Live Here: Assist college graduates with buying homes in Flint to strengthen our neighborhoods and retain their expertise to help attract 21st century enterprises
You can read Dayne's full Opportunity for All plan here.

The Welch Office Opening was a HUGE Success

Today the Walling for Mayor team is proud to announce that the new campaign office on Welch Blvd. is open and ready to work for change in Flint. Today's grand opening was attended by over 50 folks from all parts of the city. Thanks to everyone that could make it out today.

The grand opening was celebrated in song by local singing sensations The Ishmel Sisters (Jarinne, Jashanna, and Janel). They filled the new office with glorious harmony as they sang for the crowd. The Ishmel Sisters will soon share their songs at the NAACP Centennial Convention in New York City. Grand opening attendees took up a collection to help them on their trip and we collected over $100. If you would like to help them on their journey, donations can be made to The C.H.A.N.G.E Foundation, 414 West Ridgeway Ave, Flint, MI 48505-6103.

Greg Eason Endorses Dayne Walling

Today, community leader and former mayoral candidate Greg Eason endorsed Dayne Walling for mayor. In addition to Eason, former State Representative Vera Rison spoke in support of Walling.

During the primary Eason was a strong advocate for change. Eason cited several reasons for his endorsement of Walling.

"During the primary, Dayne and I got a chance to know each other and we share many of the same values, perspective, ideas and a commitment to real and positive change for Flint. His ideas on how we can strengthen our neighborhoods, attract business investment and jobs, reform city government, ensure a fair and equitable distribution of resources to all communities, encourage entrepreneurship and support our current business community, develop strong and meaningful partnerships and collaborations with the non-profit community, diversify our local business economy, create a public safety plan, establish a grants department, repair and re-establish critical partnerships with city council and other county, state and federal officials, ensure fiscal accountability and create a comprehensive master plan to better meet the challenges of the 21st century were key reasons why I believe he is the best choice for mayor" said Eason.

For the full text of Eason's remarks click here.

"I am proud to have Greg's endorsement today," said Dayne Walling. "Clearly, Greg is someone who understands the challenges that we face as a community and the need for us to work together to change how Flint works."

Continued Walling, "I'm also humbled by Vera Rison's very kind and heartfelt words. She's has been a strong leader in this city and fully understands where we have been and where we need to go to live up to our full potential."

Thanks for your Support!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the 4th Ward neighborhood picnic this Saturday! We enjoyed getting to meet more members of the community and hearing about your hopes for Flint. We will be hosting more picnics like this throughout the summer, so don't forget to check back to see when we will be in your neighborhood!

This is Flint: Class of 2009

This week the Class of 2009 at Central, Northern, Northwestern, and Southwestern Academy and other public, private and charter schools in Flint will participate in commencement ceremonies. Congratulations to all the graduating Seniors and their families for reaching this milestone of hard work.

In each school there are outstanding stories of academic and athletic achievement, community of involvement, and pursuance to overcome life's challenges. Here are just a few:

Central Senior Tiana Crayton-LaGrone was awarded the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship. Crayton-LaGrone was one of only 23 students from across the state to receive this scholarship. She is also Central's fifth Gates Millennium Scholarship recipient in the last four years.

Southwestern Academy Senior Sherelle Bell-Brown overcame many life challenges to not only graduate, but attend college. Bell-Brown's mother struggled with drug addiction that caused Bell-Brown to live in multiple foster homes over the course of 7 years. At 15 she became a teenage mother. However, through all of those challenges Bell-Brown never gave up on the dream of making a better future for herself and her young child. This fall she will be attending Grand Valley State University.

Although not all were Seniors, the Sisterhood Club of Flint Northern none the less showed a mature commitment to the community by coming together for positive activities. The group formed a weekly book club, made 40 Easter baskets for pediatric patients at Hurley Medical Center, and will be mentoring income Freshman in the fall.

Statement on today's GM announcement

Although today's bankruptcy announcement was not a surprise, its impact on Flint families was no less significant. There will be many difficult discussions around dinner tables tonight and we must work together as a community now more than ever to persevere in these challenging times. My hope is that this bankruptcy process will move as quickly as possible and that a stronger and more viable GM emerge at the end and that Flint will continue to be a place of significant production for one of America's largest companies.

I continue to ask the Obama that administration reexamine our existing trade policies that have created so many of the obstacles for our auto industry. It is unfair to continue to ask workers and their families to make sacrifices if we are unwilling to simply ask our trading partners to participate in fair trade.
