Flint Changed the World

Dayne Walling joined the UAW retirees this week at their annual pig roast. When Dayne says "Flint Changed the World" he is speaking of the hard work and legacy of these retirees, the automobiles they built, the values they fought for, and their dream of a city where everyone has opportunities to build their American Dream and where no one is excluded. It is going to take a lot of hard work to bring change to Flint, but we are rebuilding on a strong foundation.

Flint Changed the World. Working Together We Can Change Flint.

We Can Change Flint

Flint's block clubs and neighborhood organizations continue to play an important role in the revitalization of Flint. They clean abandoned lots and plant flowers to beautify the streets. They band together into crime watches to protect their neighborhoods. And they organize community gardens to help feed their neighbors. Whether they represent a street or an entire neighborhood, their work proves that we as a city have not surrendered to apathy and blight.

Dayne Walling knows that by working together we can change Flint for the better. That is why he has pledged that these groups will have a seat at the table of his neighborhood action teams. The concerns of citizens in every ward will be tracked for the first time in Flint's history and problems will be followed up on not ignored. Working together, we can improve all of Flint's neighborhoods.

Taking Care of All of Our Neighborhoods

  • Neighborhood Action Teams: Organize existing city workers into teams accountable for improving our community through collaboration and joint planning
  • Safe Streets: Open a police mini-station in every ward for community police patrols to decrease crime in neighborhoods and around schools, parks, hospitals, and businesses
  • Learn Here, Live Here: Assist college graduates with buying homes in Flint to strengthen our neighborhoods and retain their expertise to help attract 21st century enterprises

Doing Business in the 21st Century

Bringing new jobs to Flint requires supporting neighborhood businesses and new entrepreneurs in the fields of new manufacturing, energy, education and healthcare. Every business owner wants less bureaucracy and more access. This will take some real change at City Hall and Dayne Walling is working for that change now.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will you do to bring jobs to Flint?

The 21st century economy never sleeps. I will cut through the red tape at city hall and make sure that all necessary forms to start a new business in Flint are available 24/7 on the city's website. I will work with the city council to pass comprehensive legislation to streamline the new business process in Flint. And make it easier for businesses to get through the regulation and zoning process. I will work to establish neighborhood business centers that provide resources to local entrepreneurs. I will fight to ensure that Flint gets its fair share of the federal stimulus package and that Flint's voice is heard in at the state capitol in Lansing. It takes cooperation from the public sector and businesses to get real economic development and new jobs.

WALLING WINS TELEVISED DEBATE

Dayne Walling had a decisive win in tonight's televised debate. Walling clearly outlined his vision of building a new coalition that will work together to change Flint.

"We can't go down the same old road and think we are going to end up at a different destination," said Walling. "Flint is ready for change."

When asked by a viewer by why he should stay in Flint when his neighborhood has problems with crime and blight, Walling answered quickly, "Don't move - improve! Be a part of our new coalition that represents the diversity and strength of this city: Black, White and Hispanic, young and old and in between, north end, south side, and everywhere else. A coalition that understands that the differences between us as people are small when compared to what we have in common. A coalition that will work together to change Flint."

Walling continued, "I hear it from people all over this city. They are tired of the old ways of Flint's failed leadership and they are ready for fresh ideas. They are tired of being divided in order to be kept down and they are ready to come together. They are tired of the lack of opportunity and they are ready for a better future.

We can bring 21st century jobs to Flint, strengthen every neighborhood, and ensure every student goes to a great school."

Live Televised Debate at 7:00 on WJRT ABC-12

Tonight will be this campaign’s only live televised debate. You can watch it on WJRT ABC-12 at 7:00 p.m. or streaming live on The Flint Journal or WJRT ABC-12's website.

Dayne’s looking forward to talking about his positive message about how we can work together to change Flint to create 21st century jobs, strengthen every neighborhood, and ensure great schools for all students.

Dayne Wins Kettering Forum

Tonight Dayne had a decisive win at Kettering University's Mayoral Forum. The debate is one of several that he and opponent Brenda Clack will have in the next week culminating with a live debate on WJRT-ABC 12 on Tuesday.

"I think tonight's debate clearly showed the differences between the two of us," Dayne said. "I firmly believe that by working together with fresh ideas fueled by new energy we can change Flint. My opponent would have you believe that Flint should continue along the same paths that the previous failed leadership of Flint has already been down."

He continued, "For too long we've let people resort to the old and cynical tactic of division to try and get ahead. I know we can do better by working together for change. We can create new 21st Century jobs, strengthen every neighborhood, and ensure that every student from pre-school through college graduation goes to a great school."

Thanks!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your vision for the city and your plans for improvement?

My vision for Flint includes a diverse economy with good paying jobs, strong neighborhoods in all parts of the city, schools that provide a great education for all students preschool through college, and a 21st century City Hall. We need to diversify our economy and create jobs, but that won’t happen if we continue to do things the same way we always have. We need to have a bold plan of action. My plan starts with getting the city open for business by cutting the red tape and making it easier to operate, and also cleaning up abandoned properties to be redeveloped.

I will also reorganize city services into neighborhood ward teams. My administration will be run by qualified professionals who mirror the diversity in this community. I will also work closely with City Council. The days of the old battles are gone. We need change in Flint.

And the Video Contest Winner is...

Over the past few weeks the Walling for Mayor campaign has been asking for videos from our supporters that explain why they are supporting Dayne for mayor of Flint. The response was terrific and it was tough to pick a winner from so many great submissions. Thanks to everyone that participated.

The lucky winner is Angela Alexander. She will join Dayne for lunch at Blackstones in downtown Flint next week and will also receive her choice of a Walling for Mayor T-shirt or baseball cap.

You can view the video contest entries below. Thanks again to everyone that participated.

Reaching Out Voter to Voter

Monday night's letter writing party with Carrie Walling was a huge success. Twenty-five folks participated including many new volunteers. 100 voter-to-voter letters (exactly) were written and we completed nearly all of our mailings. A few volunteers also made voter-to-voter phone calls. A few ladies also took supplies home with them to work on additional letters. Thanks to everyone that participated. You can view more pictures from the event at the Walling for Mayor photostream.

The next volunteer night will on on Wednesday, July 8th from 5-7pm at the Welch Blvd. Walling Headquarters. Dayne and Carrie Walling will both be in attendance. We hope you can make it out. For more information, please call 810-233-9190 or email us at votewalling@gmail.com.
