Moving Flint Forward

Infrastructure Improvements and Economic Development in Every Ward of the City

Flint is transforming itself into a strong, sustainable city for the 21st century through the leadership of Mayor Walling. The proof of our city’s revitalization is all around us. We have diversified our economic base and become regional leaders in the emerging bio-medical and alternative energies industries. We were recently named one of eleven “comeback cities” for 2011 by Kiplinger Magazine.  Working together, there have been new infrastructure improvements and development projects in every part of the city.

Public Safety is Priority One

Public safety is number one priority for Mayor Walling and his administration. The City budgets reflect this fact: a greater percentage of our resources are dedicated to public safety than ever before at more than 70% and growing each year. It takes strong partnerships with the community to create true safety and the police department has to adopt innovative solutions that have been proven to work in other communities. Mayor Walling is calling for a new comprehensive approach to public safety in Flint that calls on every community member to become part of the solution.

Neighborhood Stabilization and Revitalization

Mayor Walling is working hard to rebuild Flint house by house, block by block, job by job, and business by business in neighborhoods all across the city. With assistance from many partner organizations and over $30 million in grant awards from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Flint’s neighborhoods are being stabilized and revitalized. The three-pronged approach utilizes a combination of demolition, rehabilitation, and new construction depending on the needs of the neighborhood and the problem properties involved. The worst ones come down, the ones that can be fixed are rehabilitated, and some areas that need an infusion of new families and new housing are being redeveloped.

Flint's Fire Department, More than 100 Strong

With the budget cuts and string of fires across the city this year, the strength and effectiveness of our fire fighters is on the minds of many people in Flint. Thankfully, a two-year federal grant has given Flint some much needed breathing room and allowed the reopening of the closed fire stations and the rehiring of fire fighters. Today, the Flint Fire Department has more than 100 personnel and the firefighting force is larger than it was when Mayor Dayne Walling took office.

There are currently more than 100 personnel in the Flint Fire Department and five fire stations are fully staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A $6.76-million Federal SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Program ) stimulus grant was awarded to Flint in May of this year allowing 39 firefighters to be rehired and the reopening of the two closed fire stations.
