FLINT, Michigan — The Flint Farmers Market was voted one of the Top Ten Favorite Farmers’ Markets in a national online contest.

American Farmland Trust, a national nonprofit organization based in Washington D.C., polled shoppers and announced the results of the contest Wednesday. Flint’s operation was one of the top ten markets in the country in the large market category and named one of the top five farmers’ markets in Michigan.

Recognition is not new for the local business, which is 105 years old and celebrating its 70th year in the new building. The Flint Farmers’ Market won first place last year in the “Love Your Farmers’ Market” contest sponsored by Care2 and LocalHarvest.

“It’s really nice to be recognized on a national level like this,” said Dick Ramsdell, manager of the Farmers’

But he went on to say that there are a lot more important initiatives happening at the market than winning awards.

The market provides fresh produce, supports local farmers and brings awareness to land-use and food quality issues, he said. Vacant lots in the city are being converted into productive farmland, he said, noting that there were more than 150 gardens in Flint this year.

“Being recognized in the contest is wonderful,” he said. “That boosts everybody’s spirits. But, underneath that positive feeling and recognition, there really are some things that are being done to make a real difference.”

Other Michigan farmers’ markets honored were Detroit’s Eastern Market, Leelanau Farmers’ Market, Holland Farmers’ Market and Fulton Street Market in Grand Rapids.
