The Flint Public Library will be one of six Michigan cities to host Kevin Boyle, this year’s “Great Michigan Read” author.
Boyle will travel through late October to talk about his book “Arc of Justice: A Saga of Civil Rights and Murder in the Jazz Age,” which is a book particularly important to the city of Flint.
“'The Arc of Justice,' set in Michigan 1925-26, speaks to the early efforts for equal rights to housing,” explained Wanda Harden of the FPL.
“In 1968, Flint Michigan made national news when voters approved a housing ordinance, outlawing discrimination in housing, the first of its kind in the nation.”
The book follows . Dr. Ossian Sweet, an African American physician finds himself charged with murder for defending his home in an all white neighborhood in 1925-1926 Detroit. What followed helped to lay the foundation for the civil rights movement and equal housing laws.
Kevin Boyle’s 'Arc of Justice' is an important book for the Michigan community,” said Leslie Acevedo, manager of public services at FPL.
