FLINT — A new $8 million state Department of Human Services building in Flint was built with more city-based contractors than first expected, said the project’s manager.
“We want city of Flint businesses working here,” said Ron Boji, the East Lansing-based project manager for the new 40,000 square-foot facility located at 4809 Clio Road.
Boji had originally agreed with the city to use local contractors to make up 20 percent of the job but the number ended up at 25-30 percent.
Flint Mayor Dayne Walling said the project was done right because it was community focused.
“It was done in a way that created a community development impact for our community,” Walling said to the crowd. “And some may question the number 25 percent and they may ask why not more? Why not 50 percent, why not 100? (But) I just want to compliment the Boji Group on their insistence that all of this work be done in a competitive and fair fashion.”
Officials cut the ribbon on the new facility at a ceremony Wednesday.
