FLINT, Michigan -- Mayor Dayne Walling has a word for the comments radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh made about the city of Flint this week:
"Ignorant"
"Rush Limbaugh is a talk show host more interested in ratings than having constructive dialogue about our real challenges," Walling said today.
"Communities across the state of Michigan all have the common challenge of rebuilding their infrastructure. That has nothing to do with party politics," the mayor said. "The problem is not a partisan one."
Limbaugh on Wednesday used Flint as an example of cities with "big-time deterioration" after Democrats "have run the show for generations."
The commentator's Web site published his comments, saying President Obama is wrong to talk about widespread dilapidation of roads, bridges and schoolhouses -- except in cities in which Democrats dominate government.
"Where is all this dilapidation taking place?," Limbaugh asked. "If there is any dilapidation taking place, it's in the inner cities, and it's in cities run by Democrats for generations. Do I need to name names? Detroit, I hate to pick on 'em, Flint, Michigan, New Orleans. You go wherever Democrats have run the show for generations and you are gonna find big-time deterioration almost without exception."
Walling called Limbaugh's statements about the city "ignorant."
He suggested Limbaugh may want to visit the city before he speaks about it, but said he wouldn't go to the trouble of making an invitation to the city formal.
"I see it as his responsibility to educate himself on the issues he speaks about," Walling said.
