FLINT, Michigan — The city continues to drive a stake deeper into the heart of an unwanted tradition.
The number of Devil’s Night fires failed to break double digits — a far cry from the mid-1990s when 200 fires raged through the city.
The city saw just six fires over the weekend, down from 21 last year.
Officials credited the watchful eyes of residents who watched neighboring vacant homes and 150 volunteers who fanned across the city.
“The number of eyes and ears make it more difficult for arsonists to come out and do their work,” said Flint Fire Battalion Chief Andy Graves, adding that the demolition of nearly 800 houses in the city paid great dividends.
Flint Public Safety Director Alvern Lock also praised the volunteers and other agencies such as the Michigan State Police that helped out.
“Without them we’d be in terrible shape,” Lock said. “The volunteers are a vital part of all this coordination.”
